Rooftop, Elevated Canopy, Commercial Solar
Burlington, MA
1 MW

Description
Massachusetts has long been a leader in renewable energy, and Nordblom Company seized the opportunity to bring clean power to two adjacent multifamily properties in Burlington, totaling 297 apartment homes. Working with Black Bear Energy as owner’s representative and Davis Hill Development (DHD) as developer and long-term owner, Nordblom overcame the typical challenges of multifamily solar—including submetered electricity, rooftop HVAC equipment, and complex financing—to deliver a forward-looking solution.
The team designed one rooftop and one parking garage canopy to support solar, with the canopy system unlocking a 370% increase in capacity compared to a traditional rooftop approach. The rooftop installation now powers the site’s common areas, while the canopy feeds clean electricity directly into the Eversource grid through Massachusetts’s SMART Program.
The result is a combined system delivering over 1 MW of capacity and more than 1,250 MWh of renewable energy each year, advancing sustainability for both Nordblom and the broader Burlington community.
“Our partnership with DHD allowed us to realize the solar vision we set forth during the development phase of the assets, and enabled us to embrace our sustainability goals.”
